Editorial methodology

Who maintains this archive, where its texts come from, how they are translated and checked, and how we correct them when we are wrong.

By Jon Auror, editorLast reviewed 2 min readCite this page
PRINCIPLE 01Primary sources only

Every text traces to a published source; when we cannot find one, we say so.

PRINCIPLE 02Nothing abridged

Texts are complete; summaries and notes are the editor’s and kept apart.

PRINCIPLE 03Open access

Every text is free to read, search and cite, with a permanent identifier.

01Who maintains this archive

True Parents Legacy is built and maintained by a small team of volunteer members of the Unification movement, with first-hand experience of Hoon Dok Hae, the Blessing, and personal study of Korean source texts. We are not an institutional translator and have no formal ties with the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU).

Our volunteer editors, translators and researchers began this archive in 2024 to make these teachings accessible to English-speaking readers worldwide. The work is unpaid and independent, motivated by personal devotion to preserving these materials with care, accuracy, and openness to correction.

02Where our texts originate

Every text in the archive belongs to one of three categories of source material.

Source categories
CategoryWhat it includes
Korean originals말씀선집 (600+ volumes), Cheon Seong Gyeong, Pyeong Hwa Gyeong, Cham Bumo Gyeong
Foundational booksExposition of the Divine Principle, Cheon Il Guk literature, Family Pledge documents, other movement publications
English-origin materialsNotes and reflections by disciples, English-language speeches, editorial commentary, historical documents

The Sources page lists every collection we draw on.

03Our editorial process

Every entry passes through the same five steps before and after it is published.

  1. Source identificationLocate the original Korean or English text, verify its provenance and date it.
  2. TranslationVolunteer translators render Korean texts with theological precision.
  3. Editorial reviewCheck accuracy, formatting and the citation patterns.
  4. Cross-referencingLink to the source (book, volume, date, place), topics, authors and related texts.
  5. Publication & correctionEntries stay open to correction after they are published.

Where the exact date of a text is unknown, we use the closest verified date or year, and say so.

04Translation: Korean to English

Translation is treated as an ongoing editorial task, not a one-time process. Translators have first-hand experience of Unification practice; we prefer the original Korean compilations, acknowledge translation variants, and welcome Korean speakers who want to contribute. Every text carries one of two statuses.

Official translation

Reproduced from a published English edition. We correct only obvious typesetting errors, and note them.

Working translation

Translated for this archive from the Korean source. Not reviewed by FFWPU; refined over time.

Example천일국 → Cheon Il Guk · 훈독회 → Hoon Dok HaeEstablished English forms are kept; the encyclopedia gives the Korean and hanja.

05Citation and attribution

References inside the texts follow four standard patterns.

Standard patterns
TypePattern
ScripturalGenesis 22:12
DoctrinalDivine Principle, Pt II, Ch. 1, §3
SermonsTitle + date + location
Book excerptsTitle, volume, page

How to cite the archive itself is set out in the citation policy.

06Editorial independence

True Parents Legacy operates as an independent educational archive. We have no formal affiliation with the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU), any official Unification Movement publishing body, or any commercial entity.

Where our presentation differs from official FFWPU positions, we direct readers to primary sources for institutional perspectives. This independence lets us focus on preservation, accessibility and educational value without the constraints of institutional translation timelines.

07Corrections
